A Madras terrace roof, also known as a Madras terrace or
simply a Madras roof, is a distinctive and culturally
significant architectural feature prevalent in South India,
especially in Tamil Nadu. This traditional roofing style is
widely used in both residential and commercial buildings.
The Madras terrace roof blends practical functionality with
traditional design, tailored to the region's climate.
Constructed using eco-friendly ‘Achikal’ bricks arranged in
overlapping layers over closely spaced teak wood rafters, it
is topped with a weathering course and finished with waterresistant clay roof tiles. This design not only enhances
durability but also contributes to effective climate adaptation.
